Description:
The currency of Gibraltar is the Gibraltar Pound. One Gibraltar Pound is worth 100 Pennies. This currency is equal in value to the British Pound. Coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Pence as well as 1, 2 and 5 Pounds. Banknotes are issued in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Pounds.
Gibraltar can print its own banknotes under the Currency Notes Act, 1934. The banknotes are issued in Pounds Sterling but are not legal currency in the UK. British banknotes, however, are accepted in Gibraltar.
Origin:
Before 1872, Gibraltar used a combination of British, Spanish and Gibraltarian Real coins. Then, in 1872, Spanish Real de Plata currency was made the official currency of Gibraltar. However, the Spanish-American War of 1898 caused the Spanish Peseta to devalue significantly and so the British Pound was adopted as the new currency. Gibraltar specific banknotes and coins were issued in 1927 and 1988 respectively and the currency was decimalized in 1971 in line with the British Pound.
